5 ways to brighten up your space with Kay Gibbons...
Grab your boots, pull on your overalls. It’s time to immerse yourself in DIY projects! Just as we live for the occasional makeover, so too is it appropriate to makeover our living spaces. As they say, “a change is as good as a holiday.” And we all could do with a holiday! Here are five ways to brighten your home.
Paint the town red!
Grab a tin of Dulux, a brush, and paint, paint, paint! You don’t have to roller the whole room, perhaps just a wall, trims, or the back of a door. If you live in a rental property, grab a huge canvas, splash your favourite colour across it and position it behind the couch as a mini feature wall. Even giving a coat of paint to a tired piece of furniture can change a room dramatically – particularly if it’s a side or coffee table.
Cover it up!
Lounges aren’t the easiest of things to replace, especially on a whim. However, the simplest thing to do is cover it! You don’t need to know how to sew up a storm or reinvent the wheel either. A sheet, a throw rug, or a ready-made coverlet will do the job perfectly. That way, as each season blusters along or a certain mood happens to strike, you can simply pull one cover off and store it away until you’re ready to air it out next time.
Hang the expense!
Wall art can be as expensive or as cheap as your pocket allows. If you do invest a wad of cash into your art, make sure you’re going to love it for a long time, or, know you can on-sell it at least, when the time comes. A fabulous way to trial a particular look is to buy an inexpensive version of what you’ve got in mind, and live with it until you decide yes or no. Nonetheless, wall art has the ability to achieve a lot in a short space of time, effort, and money.
Floored!
Rugs, like a decent coffee, are an instant pick-me-up. You can quite literally change the colour of your day by replacing the old flooring with something funky and new. Make sure it’s appropriately sized for your room. Just as hanging a small painting on a large wall doesn’t look right, neither does a tiny rug on a huge floor space. Bear in mind high traffic areas. Think about colours and textures and what will or won’t show the dirt. Washable cotton dhurries look fabulous and add a touch of the exotic to your room.
Rearrange!
Sometimes all it takes to freshen up a room is to rotate the furnishings and paintings from one room to another. The works you’ve been hanging in your bedroom for the past six months, air it out in the living space for a time. Rearranging furniture can also give a new vibe to a living area. Thinking outside the square opens up a whole new kinda magic. Let your imagination wander.
