Located in Melbourne’s inner north, the renovation and extension of this beautiful 1920’s Federation home was hidden under a not-so-beautiful 1980’s renovation. With each layer owner builder Yolanda peeled back she uncovered more of the history of the house, including photos and original period features that had been hidden for decades. Clarke street, a name synonymous with prestige and old money, has an abundance of heritage listed properties. This particular house sits proud on the site, with a strikingly large and thus unique single gable..

The brief was to create a family home, restore the heritage front to it’s original glory and add a modern extension with a touch of drama. As a family they required zoned living and sleeping quarters, with spaces to come together and spaces to be apart. The site wasn’t without its challenges, it had a significant 5m fall from front to back, which from they start Yolanda knew would have implications with both respect to design and construction costs. Fast forward 3 years and the completed home houses a total of 4 bedrooms, three bathrooms and a large open plan living/dining/kitchen that connects seamlessly to the pool, undercover alfresco and garden.

“I think I’m proud of the fact that we took the road less travelled, and decided to restore the property, instead of undertaking a standard knockdown rebuild. This project has been a labour of love for not only myself as the owner, but the builder and entire army of people involved in making the house look the way it does. The finished photos are a testament to the teamwork and dedication at every step in this 3 year journey.” Says Yolanda.
