Nightingale 1 was initially conceived back in 2014 by Breathe Architecture. Breathe, who had just completed the award-winning sustainable development The Commons, were keen to build a well-designed, community-led building for owner-occupiers, not investors, that was financially, socially and environmentally sustainable.

The apartments in Nightingale 1 have been designed to exemplary levels of environmental sustainability with 100 per cent fossil fuel-free building operations with a minimum 7.5-star NatHERS thermal rating including features such as recycled timber, mid-steel light fittings and solar roof panels.

A key feature of the Nightingale 1 project is that it has partnered with Caroma – Australia’s leading bathroom and kitchen wares supplier. For 75 years, Caroma has been committed to conserving water in its products through its continual innovations in bathroom technology. It has continually delivered best-in-class water saving solutions across many products.

The unique Caroma Cleanfush® toilet features in each of Nightingale 1’s 20 apartments. The Caroma Cleanflush® is an Australian first in bathroom technology. It features a rimless toilet bowl and new flush and flow technology resulting in a bowl eliminating the build-up of germs and bacteria and is easier to clean compared to traditional toilets. Engineered with a more powerful and precise flush stream, the Cleanflush® technology enables a superior solution in clearing the bowl.

Caroma proudly aligns with the sustainability principles championed by Nightingale Housing – a not-for-profit organisation which provides the support and processes enabling architects to deliver homes that have the future of the planet firmly in mind.
